The best mules to take into spring

Share This:

Spring has sprung and it’s starting to feel good; days are longer, nights are lighter, and there’s a buzz in the air that only a new season can bring. Springtime is all about renewal and change – so, when we think about what we want to breathe new life into, it’s got to be footwear.

With transitional months comes spring showers, so though it’s not quite time to retire those reliant GORE-TEX silhouettes, blue skies are signalling the reach for mules and clogs.

We’re big advocates for mules – there’s something for every occasion – camping and post-trail recovery or running quick errands and dinner dates. Honestly, the options are endless.

This season, we’re taking you through some of our favourite mules of the moment from Clarks Originals, Nike, Birkenstock, Crocs, Merrell, UGG and adidas Originals. So, whether you’re looking for something techy or pure comfort, hopefully, you can find it here. Let’s take a look.

Clarks Originals Trek Mule Suede

We’re starting things off with the perfect mule for transitional weather, thanks to a little thing called fluffy lining. Clarks Originals transformed its iconic Desert Trek into a modern mule silhouette that’s a dream come true for the lover of minimalism and Scandi styling. The beauty of opting for a lined mule at the start of spring is that with unpredictable weather, you can wear your Trek Mules with confidence and not worry about cold feet.

Nike Calm Mule

As spring comes around, it’s time to take a breath and take a moment to check in with yourself. Nike set out to create a calm and comfortable experience for the wearer of its mule, and we think it’s achieved just that. Wearing the Calm Mule is like stepping into a plushy meadow, thanks to the single piece of responsive foam that moulds to your foot.

Merrell Hydro Next Gen Moc

Usually associated with hiking silhouettes, Merrell has been known to deliver some quality mules. Today, we’d like to introduce the Hydro Next Gen Moc – the latest from the Hydro lineage. Merrell has thought of everything with this design, from hands-free entry to an improved heel shape for a friction-free experience.

This one truly stands out for us on innovation alone, the shoe is constructed from BLOOM foam, that’s made from algae – nature’s plastic. Through this method, 93 litres of water and CO2 in the air are cleaned per shoe. So, yes this design is sturdy, water-friendly, comfy, lightweight, and attractive, but it’s also a green option for your collection.

Birkenstock Boston

Now it’s over to one of the heavyweights of the mule world – Birkenstock’s Boston. Originally launched in 1979, this design has seen a lot and has lived to tell the tale. While some may take this one with them through the year, with the accompaniment of a cable knit sock, others determine spring is the time to bring the Bostons out of their hibernation.

Birkenstock Boston in Taupe

An untouchable piece of Germanic design, Birkenstock’s mule is deliciously minimalist with a textured suede upper that drapes over the cork midsole. We chose the ‘Taupe’ iteration because it literally goes with everything and it’s hard to go wrong with.

Crocs Echo Clog

Known to split opinion, there’s just something about Crocs that gets people talking. If you still find yourself on the fence about the brand, maybe we can tilt you in the right direction. After a few years under its belt as one of the popular kids, it’s become clear that this unique label is going nowhere. The Echo Clog is a standout for spring – not only does the futuristic design defy conformity, but you’ll also find it’s pretty practical. Like other Crocs, the Echo Clog is water-friendly so it can accompany you on outdoor adventures to the lake – or wherever you plan to go.

UGG Goldenstar Clog

Pure bliss. The Goldenstar Clog from UGG is an all-around luxury, crafted from premium suede with a minimalist design and the comfort that UGG are so notorious for. Like some of the sportier mule designs, a swivel heel strap offers a 2-in-1 wearing option, so whether you’re going to the corner shop or going further afield, the Goldenstar fits the situation.

Another greener design, we like that this UGG iteration is made from recycled and responsible materials. The textile lining and binding are made from 100% recycled polyester, while the sole unit is crafted from Sugarcane EVA. UGG DNA is ever-present, so if you’re already a fan of the brand this is the perfect solution to swap out your warmer models, or if you’re new to the brand, this is the gateway design to invest in.

adidas Originals AdiFOM Stan Smith Mule

Our final stop is the AdiFOM Stan Smith Mule, a tribute to the iconic Stan Smith shoe. Familiar detailing can be spotted on the silhouette – the iconic Stan Smith heel tab signals its heritage. Somewhere between a traditional clog, a gardening shoe and a glimpse into the future, this slip-on shoe has a platform sole and chunky proportions, which separates it from the original blueprint.

Don’t let the platform fool you, the Stan Smith Mule is a comfortable ride – we’d recommend slipping on for a trip to the coffee shop or a stroll around the park. Crafted from one piece of Adifom, this design is a little different for the new season and it’s another eco-minded option.
