It’s that time of the year when Nike’s annual “BETRUE” collection – which started back in 2012 – returns to celebrate National Pride Month, supporting all people irrespective of who they love or their gender identity. For 2019, the colourful pack pays homage to the 50-year anniversary of the Stonewall uprising and the late, great Gilbert Baker – a LGBTQIA+ rights activist and designer of the famous rainbow flag – with a fitting rendition of the Air Max 90.
We’re pretty certain you’ll have come across Gilbert Baker’s work whether you’ve heard about the LGBTQIA+ advocate or not. His rainbow-inspired flag has become synonymous with Pride ever since its creation back in 1978, with the six-colour iteration becoming a symbol for the movement across the globe.
But it’s the original eight-colour makeup – a style that couldn’t Baker couldn’t create for the 1979 San Francisco Pride Festival due to a lack of pink fabric – which places itself proudly throughout this Air Max 90 model.
Colourfully crafted, the pair’s overlaying sidewall Swooshes are built from embroidered cotton, running from pink to violet and featuring just about every colour in between. Similarly, the sneaker’s right insole boasts the same eight hues and calls out what each of the shades represents: Pink: Sexuality, Red: Life, Orange: Healing, Yellow: Sunlight, Green: Nature, Turquoise: Magic, Blue: Serenity, Violet: Spirit.
Just like most Air Max 90 styles previous, the silhouette’s fashioned from a blend of breathable mesh with supportive leather overlays, while underfoot an Air bubble in the midsole cushions your every step.
The Nike Air Max 90 QS “BETRUE” will be available via the size? website and in selected size? stores on Saturday 29th June, priced at £120 and available in both men’s and women’s sizes.
