Nike Air Max 90 – The Changes
Three decades have passed since the Air Max 90 first graced the shelves in 1990 and we guess it’s safe to say a lot’s changed for Nike’s Air Max lineage ever since. Originally dubbed the Air Max III, the AM90 was only the third silhouette to boast visible Air-tech in the sole unit; in the 30 years that have followed it’s been hard to keep up with the Beaverton-innovators countless Air-injected releases.
But, thanks to its timeless design, the Air Max 90 has always managed to stand the test of time. Tinker Hatfield’s classic has grown into one of the true OG’s of the streetwear scene; the dizzying array of reissues, collaborations and reinventions over the years has only helped to fuel the love for the model further.
So to celebrate its 30th anniversary, this season, Nike has lovingly recrafted the Air Max 90 with a few slight tweaks to its uppers that take it closer to the original than post-2008 reissues – something that the Air Max aficionados amongst you will surely appreciate.
What’s exactly changed is clear when you take a look at the upper panelling: the mudguard starts lower at the forefoot, sloping a little flatter and rising closer to the collar than recent iterations.
The shoe’s toe box height has also been readjusted to make it slightly narrower for a more streamlined aesthetic; so too has the heel branding’s shape. What’s more, extra padding at the ankle serves up plush comfort and takes the AM90’s design one step closer to the original.
Oh, and there’s one final nod to the ’90s: Nike’s original slimline hazard-striped shoebox is back once more for that classic finishing touch.
