Refreshed in a herbal guise for SS19, the iconic Air Max 95 returns this season in a ‘Fresh Mint’ colour palette. We’ll talk you through this latest release later on, but for the few of you out there who aren’t aware of the silhouette’s origins let’s cast your mind back to 1995.

The ’90s footwear scene was largely dominated by basketball sneakers – thanks to the success of Nike’s Jordan line – and the Beaverton brand saw this as an opportunity to shift their attention to the performance sneaker market and introduce a radical new upgrade into their Air Max lineage.

ACG designer Sergio Lozano sat at the helm of the project, and with his experience with the outdoors firmly in mind, he drew inspiration from a rainy day in Nike headquarters’ home of Beaverton, Oregon. Lozano stated:

“I was looking across the lake out into the trees and I began picturing the process of rain eroding the earth and thought it would be interesting if the perfect product was unearthed by erosion.”

And the inspiration is clearly evident: the pair’s final design boasted a gradient grey upper that resembled the geographical markings of eroded rock walls. Keeping in tune with the nature theme, the Air Max 95 also looked to human anatomy as another key influence, with layered panels inspired by muscle fibres and flesh, nylon eyelets that were fashioned after ribs, a midsole that took after the spine.

Fast-forward to 2019 and the Air Max 95 is making a return dressed in an OG-inspired ‘Fresh Mint’ colourway. The layered upper takes on the iconic a grey gradient which merges seamlessly into the black midsole for a complementary finish. Underfoot, the Air unit takes on the minty green tone, alongside the nylon eyelets and signature mini Swoosh on the heel. Another nice nod to the original: this latest reissue also boasts the addition of PSI measurements on the soleplate – just like it did 24 years ago.
