Jay Rock – size? Carnaby Street
Following on from our stacked 2018 line-up, we were pleased to announce Grammy Award winner Jay Rock for the first size? session of 2019. It’s not every day that you get the opportunity to have Grammy Award winner perform, so we were excited and privileged to announce that the critically acclaimed Cali native would be playing our flagship Carnaby Street store.
Hailing from Watts, California, Jay Rock is an MC with a hard, but lyrical West Coast style, following in the footsteps of a long line of Californian hip-hop artists that include NWA, Dilated Peoples and DJ Quik, to name a few. Signed to Top Dawg Entertainment, Jay Rock won a 2019 ‘best rap performance’ Grammy Award for his ‘King’s Dead’ track, which featured stable mate, friend and hip-hop icon, Kendrick Lamar.
Releasing three studio albums to date, Jay Rock has been on the rap scene for some time, discovered by TDE founder Anthony Tiffith back in 2005. But it was his connection with the self-professed ‘King of New York’, Kendrick Lamar, that amplified Jay Rock into the mainstream, with both artists joining forces on multiple tours, alongside forming the hip-hop supergroup ‘Black Hippy’ with fellow West Coast Alumni Ab-Soul and ScHoolboy Q.
The headline to a night that was warmed up nicely by London MC’s Malick IV and Tre’bore, Jay Rock played a packed-out Carnaby St crowd with two tracks: WIN’ was followed by the future hall of fame record, ‘King is Dead’. We sat down with Jay Rock to talk about what has influenced his music career, future plans and his favourite footwear growing up.
Stay tuned in to our social channels for updates and future announcements on size? sessions.
