adidas Originals Phantom

One of adidas’ lesser known running silhouettes makes a welcome return as the 3-Stripe brand’s autumn/winter 2012 collection starts to get into full swing.

Not to the confused with the adidas basketball release from the 1990’s that shared the same name, the Phantom is running specific silhouette that first launched in 1985. Said to have originally been built to benefit over-pronate athletes, the wide looking stance of the Phantom’s sole unit is perfectly complimented by the aerodynamic aesthetics of the upper resulting in a true master piece from the heyday of mid ‘80’s lightweight training shoe design. The overall shape of the Phantom is spot on and it’s a wonder why adidas have chosen so long to reintroduce it into the market.

In a year where hybrid-technology-laced releases appear to be reigning king it’s nice to see rarer, simplistic models like the Phantom brought back to life. Definitely a release for those in the know, it’ll be interesting to see how forgotten gems like the Phantom perform against the more familiar silhouettes that we’ve become used to seeing over recent months and indeed how high they’ll register on the wish lists of the latest generation of footwear fanatics. All will be revealed in due course, we for one though are big fans of this long overdue classic resurrection from adidas’ extensive back catalogue.

Expect to see the pool blue/dark royal-red Phantom hit size? stores and online next week with the OG retro greyscale version to follow soon after.
