Freek Coppens has been busy as a DJ for 18 years now, and now the Netherlands’-native is set to join us for our size? sessions Mix #032 – it’s going to be a good one.
The Defected Records regular is renowned for his house style and we can’t wait to see what he’s got in store this Friday. Before that though, keep on reading and get to know a little bit more about the man behind the mix.
Tell us about yourself; where you’re from, what you do and what’s your shoe size?
“Hi guys, my name is Freek Coppens aka Ferreck Dawn, and I’m from Eindhoven, the Netherlands. My shoe size is 11.”
How did you get started in the music industry?
“I visited my first big rave in 2001, the event was called ‘Sensation White’ in the Amsterdam Arena. 40,000 people dressed in white, such an amazing event. I was in awe with everything, and that was definitely the moment I realised I want to be a DJ as well. I started dj’ing age 17 (so that’s 18 years now) and started producing at the age of 20.”
How would you describe your music style?
“My style is house. I love to include heavy basslines and r&b/soul vocals.”
What has been your record of the year so far, and what are you looking forward to hearing for the rest of the year?
“I’m really happy with the response to my track ‘By My Side‘ on Defected this year. The feedback on that one was great. And I loved The Chris Lake edit of Josement – All Night Alone.
Have you been making much music recently and can we expect some releases soon?
“I’m in the studio non-stop. I have a lot of new music finished! I have a collab with David Penn and Andreya Tryiana coming up on Defected, a track with A-Trak on his label Fool’s Gold and finishing up tracks with Shermanology, Ashibah, Kormak and Guz.”
Has there been a particular event/party that has stood out for your career?
“There’s a number of them for sure. I really loved Defected Croatia last year, such amazing energy on the festival site. Of course, Tomorrowland is always amazing to play, and I loved my first tour in Australia, New Zealand and Bali this year.”
And looking further ahead, who should we be looking out for in 2021?
“My friend Guz is killing it. Keep an eye out for him.”
On Friday you’re broadcasting an exclusive size? sessions Mix for us. What can we expect to hear?
“A combination of old and new tracks, a mixture between house and tech-house and just overall feelgood vibes.”
Outside of the music industry, where do you look for inspiration?
“That can be literally everything. Hearing a melody in a commercial, hearing a track in a television show etc. Literally everything.”
