Following on from the resurgence of our exclusive OG adidas Originals’ SL 76 colour-ups, we’re back once more with a duo of makeups inspired by the stage it made its debut on, the 1976 Montreal Olympics.
Most of you won’t have been around for the games or would have been too young to remember them, but as it goes, Montreal ’76 had one of the strangest build-ups ever.
With money looking tight in 1974, it was really starting to look doubtful that the tournament would go-ahead two years later. So as the money began to run out while all of the facilities were still under construction, the Canadian government decided to launch a public lottery.
Lotteries were still seen as a form of gambling at the time, making the scheme truly provocative. However, the lottery paid off and by selling $10 tickets across the country a whopping $15 million was raised for the Games.
So to commemorate the lottery, the first shoe in the pack takes its colours from the very tickets that were sold across Canada. An ‘Ercu Tint’ hue paints the trainer’s nylon and suede uppers, with dashes of ‘Glory Amber’ to the tongue, heel, 3-Stripes and midsole. What’s more, we’ve also decorated the footbed with a lottery ticket graphic for one final nod to the Montreal fundraiser.
Next up, we’ve reworked the SL 76 in a vivid guise inspired by ‘Amik’, the tournament’s playful beaver mascot.
Keeping it as close to the OG as possible, we’ve paid special attention to ensure the materials are true to the era and kept the tried and tested combination of super-light woven nylon uppers, plus supportive suede overlays on the T-toe and eyestay for added durability.
A white hue encompasses the base, while serrated black leather 3-Stripes come trimmed with shades of pink, gold and blue as a nod to the ’76 Montreal mascot. Oh, and as a finishing touch, Amik himself decorates the trainer’s footbed for an honorary finish.
