Away from all the hip hop and the filmmaking, Bobbito Garcia’s influence in ‘sneaker culture’ is not to be taken with a pinch of salt. His 1991 ‘Confessions of a Sneaker Addict‘ article for The Source was the very first piece of sneaker journalism that we all read regularly today.

We recently caught up with Bobbito ahead of his size? (20:20 Mix) for an in-depth chat, touching on his influence in the footwear world and his illustrious career as a DJ and Filmmaker. Now the legend has shared a few of his favourite silhouettes for you all to take a look at. Enjoy.

Nike Air Force 1 Hi x Doin’ It In The Park – 2012

Nike Air Force 1 Hi x Doin' It In The Park - 2012

“When Nike Philippines presented my first film ‘Doin’ It In The Park: Pick-Up Basketball, NYC’ [www.doinitinthepark.com] in Manila, the local marketing director created a 2-of-2 Air Force 1 with the doc’s logo for me and my Co-Director, Kevin Couliau. That whole trip was unforgettable! Truly the world’s capital for outdoor ball, by far, in my humble opinion.”

Nike Air Force 1 Laser x Bobbito – 2003

Nike Air Force 1 Laser x Bobbito - 2003

“In 2003 I released my book ‘Where’d You Get Those? New York City’s Sneaker Culture: 1960-1987‘ and was heading to ESPN for an on-air interview. Nike designer Mark Smith got tipped off and since he had just pushed forward laser technology on uppers, he rushed these to me before I went live!”

“I have yet to leave my block during the pandemic. Literally. So when Converse sent their new G4 low cuts to me unexpectedly, trust I was elated!

“Contrary to belief, I don’t really receive promos out the blue from brands often at all, so this was welcomed, and timely. I’ve worn them every day since to jump rope and work on my handle (NYC Parks & Recreation took down all the rims in the local courts so I can’t actually play ball until this health crisis passes, unfortunately).”

Nike iD Kyrie 6 x Full Court 21 – FC21

Nike iD Kyrie 6 x Full Court 21 - FC21

“As I mentioned previously, I don’t receive promos too often (generally brands hit me off when I’m making a DJ or speaking appearance for them), so once a year I treat myself to a pair that I really want to wear.

“I LOVED the Kyrie 3s, perhaps my favourite shoe to play in this decade, and I’ve stayed loyal to the model since. I created an ID with the 6s inspired by my tournament ‘Full Court 21’ [www.fullcourt21nyc.com], which I produce in 30 international cities. I was looking forward to rocking them this summer, but unfortunately, it doesn’t look like any qualifiers will happen due to the pandemic. So these will be on ice… until further notice!”

PUMA Clyde x Bobbito – 2016

PUMA Clyde x Bobbito - 2016

“Man, can’t say what an HONOUR it was to collab with PUMA in 2016 on one of THE most iconic sneakers in the history of the game! Walt ‘Clyde’ Frazier and I were both on the NY Knicks broadcast team for Madison Square Garden Network in 2006-07, and he was such a class act to be around, plus he showed me mad love.”
