Next up in our ongoing archive series with adidas Originals, we’ve turned our attention to the BC Trainer once again.

When it first landed in the ’70s, the BC Trainer originally coined its title from the Eastern European Handball Tournament of the same name, the Baltic Cup. Handball never really took off over here in England, but throughout the rest of the continent in the ‘70s and ‘80s, the sport rode a wave of popularity. Sports brands such as adidas were quick to produce specialist silhouettes for the sport, one of which being the BC Trainer.

The low-cut trainer bears a similar resemblance to its other sporting cousin, the Handball Spezial, but the more attuned adidas collectors amongst you will notice the slight deviation on the toe box. The BC was one of only a handful of adidas releases not to feature a supportive T-shaped overlay on the toe, making it stand out in an era of low-rising suede adidas shoes.

Now, the icon returns once more in an all-new makeup. Due to licensing restrictions, we’ve had to make a slight tweak to our 1-to-1 reissue’s title, but other than that the rest of the BC Trainer remains true to the specs of the ‘70s model.

With a colourway inspired by the adidas Japan from the 80s, a vibrant orange hue sweeps across the pair’s suede uppers, with a deep plum purple shade painting the leather 3-Stripes and heel counter. The shoe’s all-new moniker sits on the lateral side in the brand’s signature golden finish, while below a classic gum rubber outsole finishes the silhouette in classic adidas fashion.
