Joining the size?previews family, true to size? is a new weekly show giving you an honest and behind the scenes look at the footwear industry and some of the products within it.

This week we’ve taken a look at some of the latest releases from PUMA, adidas Originals and Nike that fall under the current ‘chunky’ runner trend. Thicker midsoles, premium materials and wider shapes have got everyone’s attention at the moment.

Firstly, we turned our attention to the PUMA RS Collection, a range that draws inspiration from the eccentric Computer Shoe from 1986, a runner with a data recording module on the heel to record the wearers performance. As well as the more traditional looking shoes in the line, the RS-0 takes these classic design sensibilities and re-interprets them into a more modern, fashion-focused shoe.

Nike’s latest M2K Tekno nods to running shoes from the 90’s that help the brand boom throughout the decade. Free from visible windows, these were go-to, all purpose training shoes made from longlasting leather, mesh and suede. With the strange rise in ‘hype’ popularity the Monarch’s undergone recently, the M2K Tekno is a modernised update on Jason Mayden’s Air Monarch II. The original gained a cultlike meme status on Instagram, and soon found itself on the feet of the fashion elite.

Dipping directly into the archive and making a few little tweaks to branding in the process, adidas Originals reply with the Yung-1. An updated version of the Falcon from the mid 90’s, the original performance branding has been stripped away and replaced with the Originals trefoil. The first time around the Falcon sat alongside other greats from the era such as the Galaxy, and it’s design is still timeless today.
