A legend from Nike – the Air Huarache

The Nike Air Huarache is an embodiment of Tinker Hatfield’s innovation and knack for superior cushioning. First released in 1991, the silhouette still maintains its futuristic appeal even today.

Originally designed as a lightweight, running shoe, the Huarache was stripped of the renowned Swoosh logo and infused with technology making it a distinctive shoe in Nike’s lineage. The sock-like neoprene look and feel gave the shoe icon status, with the tagline ‘Have you hugged your foot today?’.

After an experimental release to runners, the demand increased incredibly due to the comfort of the shoe. From there, it didn’t stay in the hands of runners for long. Thanks to Will Smith and Jerry Seinfeld wearing the pairs on screen, the Nike Air Huarache took over the pop culture scene as well as the sportswear market with world champion sprinter, Michael Johnson featuring in Nike’s campaign advert for the shoe.

From high-heat collaborations from the likes of Stüssy, to an ACG colourway inspired by the Lunar Air 180, the Nike Air Huarache has become a firm favourite in the streetwear community with numerous colour-ups adorning the feet of sneaker aficionados to this day.
