size? x ASICSTIGER GEL-LYTE OG by Segawa Thirty Seven
Our latest collaborative project with ASICSTIGER see’s us head back out east to Japan to create a traditionally themed rendition of the GEL-Lyte OG. The ’36 Views’ themed runner features colourways focused around the paintings of celebrated Ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai, with the palette picking hues from his legendary block-printed series of artworks that captured Mount Fuji from varying viewpoints around Japan.
In the modern day, Ukiyo-e artwork is beginning to regain popularity within the country, and many artists are starting to evolve the artform and bring it into the modern day, one of which is Tokyo based animator Segawa Thirty Seven. Segawa takes original Ukiyo-e block paintings that are centuries old, and re-interprets them through his own lens, adding a contemporary spin and commentary of his own to make them more relatable to today.
While over in Tokyo last year working on this project, we got the chance to meet up with Segawa at his home on the outskirts of Tokyo to find out more about how he discovered Ukiyo-e in the first place, and why it’s an important part of Japanese history that should be preserved for future generations to enjoy. We later commissioned him to create his own interpretation of a Ukiyo-e print incorporating the ASICSTIGER GEL-LYTE OG ’36 Views’, depicting a fictional thirty seventh view of Mount Fuji.
Limited to only 500 pairs, the size? x ASICSTIGER GEL-Lyte OG ’36 Views’ will be available exclusively through the size?previews app and in size? Carnaby Street, Birmingham, Bath, Glasgow, Koln, Manchester, Toulouse and Milan on Saturday 24th February, priced at £90.
