Creatives take on the Vans Authentic Duck Canvas pack
Vans has always done things its own way, ever since it opened for business as The Van Doren Rubber Company in Anaheim, California, back in 1966. Synonymous with that famed all-over pattern deep-rooted in our psyche, the brand has been a mainstay in the collections of skateboarders, surfers, fashionistas, musicians and anyone looking for a comfy ride. Now known as The Authentic, the first silhouette from the brand was named Style #44 – a firm choice for skaters in the ‘70s thanks to its rugged make-up and sticky sole.
The DIY spirit of Vans has long since fed into the community, from skateboarding and travel to fashion and music, with pop-up skate events and highly-coveted collaborations. Even the famed checkerboard print was born from DIY when local teen skaters started colouring in the midsole of their #48, aka the Classic Slip-On, sparking Steve Van Doren to print the pattern onto the canvas upper. This is why it made perfect sense to partner with Vans and set creatives the brief of customising the Authentic Vans Duck Canvas, letting them show us Vans their way.
Founded in 2022 by Kamila and TJ, Mila Textiles is all about hand embroidery and showstopping pieces. Kamila studied at the renowned London College of Fashion, while TJ’s background is in creative direction – together they’re the perfect match.
For their take on the iconic Vans staple, they translated their one-of-a-kind, wearable art and played on the pastel hues of the pack. Letting the Authentic speak for itself, the delicate intricacy of Mila Textile’s hand-beading roots at the crisp white laces, growing beyond the usual dimensions and sprouting into its own playful world. To cement the collaboration, a matching embellished balaclava was added to the mix – a signature accessory from the brand.
Self-confessed felt fanatic, Rosie Anwara, first realised her niche after re-creating and crafting her own Christmas tree decorations after a fire wiped out her original collection. Originally from Newcastle, Rosie studied fashion at uni and now pours her creativity into one-of-a-kind, mesmerising felt creations that often nod to pop culture references or familiar objects – think Monster Munch, sauce packets and trainers.
For Rosie’s take on the Vans Authentic, she built her own – from felt, naturally. Each colourway of the pack was lovingly created in a miniature version, complete with a waffle sole and license plate branding.
