Fashion has a permanent imprint on football culture; while what happens on the pitch might be the most important part of football for many, the casual brought a new element of tribalism to the stands – what you wear.

Due to Nick Love and co.’s excessive and rich hooligan movies of the past two decades, the football casual subculture might appear to you as a drug-fuelled, Aquascutum nightmare of fast-talking cockneys and Danny Dyer smutty witticism. Now, we aren’t saying that world doesn’t exist, but the culture surrounding terrace fashion has a bit more substance to it.

Hailing back to the ‘70s, terrace fashion found its feet when fans travelled Europe and got a taste for the designer gear that they found along the way. Hordes of fans brought back all of this gear to their hometowns, using it as a way to have a one-up on rival fans while blending into the crowds easier with police on the prowl for hooligans.

With Liverpool’s European success in the ‘70s and ‘80s, they stand tall as one of the sentinels of this switch in terrace fashion. Arguably starting as a means to stand out amongst the rest; the bulky clothing and team colours were replaced with neat haircuts, slimmer jeans, brightly coloured designer uppers and – of course – a pair of 3-Stripes.
