For The First Time In 15 Years – The Air Jordan 4 Retro ‘Cool Grey’ Returns
Nowadays we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to colourways. New makeups of our favourite silhouettes drop week in week out, but back in 2004, it was a different story. New colour schemes were scarce and the same palettes were often recycled with new iterations – so when Jordan broke the mould in 1989 with the coveted ‘Cool Grey’ iteration it’s fair to say it went down pretty well.
Returning in a like-for-like reissue, the Air Jordan 4 ‘Cool Grey’ retains all of its older sibling’s subtle details. Cool grey nubuck makes up the uppers, with a glimmering chrome Jumpman emblem sitting on the heel and hits of Maize Yellow decorate the tongue branding, Air bubble and outsole. Unlike the ’89 OG – and the recent Air Jordan IV ‘Bred’ reissue – the Air 4 Retro swaps the usual plastic ‘Winged’ side straps for complimentary nubuck panels in the same grey hue, rounding the silhouette off nicely.
Here’s another little nugget of info for you: the ‘Cool Grey’ palette originally made its debut 3 years earlier on the brand’s Air 6 model. Designer Gentry Humphrey drew influence from Nike’s Air Max 95, switching up the runner’s successful earthy grey makeup and transferring the Air Jordan 6 for the basketball consumer.
