The Nike Air Max 1 has always been a classic, from its birth over 20 years ago up until the present day. This season, Nike unveils two premium iterations of the famed silhouette, arriving in ‘Wheat Gold’ & ‘Dark Obsidian’ colour palettes with crepe rubber outsoles.

Initially released in 1987, the Air Max 1’s OG Red release gave the world quite an eyeful when it first hit the shelves. It was the first shoe to feature a visible air unit (a transparent bubble in the midsole) where you could actually witness the technology at work; ‘Air’ had been present inside the midsole’s of several of Nike’s previous releases (notably introduced in the Tailwind in 1978) but this was the first time you were able to experience it with your own eyes. The story goes that designer Tinker Hatfield drew inspiration from the eccentric Centre Pompidou in Paris, where the clear architecture allowed you to see the inner workings of the cultural destination. His architectural past chimed with this idea, and the aesthetic of the Air Max 1 was born.

The revolutionary silhouette remains one of the brand’s most popular styles, mainly due to the visible Air Unit, the use of clean lines and varied colourways. Here, the model is delivered in an experimental mix of materials; supple nubuck makes up the runner’s base, with luxe suede and corduroy overlays making up the premium rendition.  Further updates include soft Terry-cotton towelling crafting the signature side panel Swoosh and tongue tab.

Perhaps the most noteworthy upgrade to the trainer is the addition of a crepe rubber outsole, unseen on the Air Max 1 since the early ’00s. The gripping outsole sits below the usual visible-air midsole, providing ultimate levels of traction on a range of surfaces.
