ASICS Tiger Gel Mai OG
One of the brands more obscure releases from the 1990’s, the ASICS Tiger Gel Mai returns for 2017 in it’s OG form. Featuring subtle design updates for this reissue, it’s obvious signature feature is the bold asymmetric lacing system that runs down the lateral side of each shoe.
The shoe returned for the first time late last year as part of Ronnie Fieg’s ‘Legends Day’ Collection, covered in a premium suede ‘Militia’ themed colourway. An extremely well received release for such an eccentric creation, it’s definitely set a positive tone for the OG colourway to return this year. A combination of breathable mesh and webbed suede paneling covers the upper, and these panels are not just there for visual effect. Acting as lace eyestays the black webs help bring each side of the shoe together once the laces are fastened to ensure a secure lockdown.
Interestingly the Gel Mai is one of the only ASICS Tiger running shoes that doesn’t feature the iconic Tiger stripes that would usually span across the side of each shoe. The detail has been noticeably moved down onto the rear of the midsole, but still sits boldly on top of the clean white unit.
The first two colourways to release this year include the OG blue & white combination, alongside a darker monochrome pair that transforms the runner into more of a lifestyle orientated release that still hints at it’s performance origins.
Both colourways of the ASICS Tiger Gel Mai will be available online and in size? stores on Friday 28th April, priced at £100.
