Running shoes take on a lot. They drive us forward when we’re not feeling that extra few kilometres, they protect us from dusty paths and muddy puddles, and they help us reach PBs. So from time to time, it’s nice to show them a little respect. We’ve teamed up with the experts at Jason Markk, who offered us an education on how to clean running shoes. Follow the team’s helpful guides below to keep your running trainers looking box fresh.

How to clean On Cloud running shoes

Known for its revolutionary Cloud technology, On Running shoes complement soft landings with explosive take-offs. If you’re already an On convert and you’re wondering how to clean your On Running trainers – especially the outsole and mesh upper – worry not, all you need is the Jason Markk Quick Clean Kit.

Step 1: Dry brush the upper and sole

Start by using the Delicate Brush to brush off any loose dirt or debris from the upper, midsole, and outsole. This step helps lift surface dust without pushing it deeper into the materials.

Step 2: Scrub the outsole with Foam

Apply 1–2 pumps of Jason Markk Ready-To-Use Foam directly onto the Delicate Brush, then scrub the outsole in circular motions.

Step 3: Wipe the sole with a Microfiber Towel

Once you’ve scrubbed up the sole, use the Microfiber Towel to wipe away any dirt and foam buildup – this gives you more control without over-wetting the shoe.

Step 4: Rinse midsole (if needed)

Most On Running silhouettes have holes in the midsole, so you might find foam trapped inside during the cleaning process. No problem, simply give the area a gentle rinse – remember to keep it light and not soak the shoe.

Step 5: Clean the upper

Reapply foam to your Delicate Brush and gently scrub the upper section by section. The brush is safe for engineered mesh and soft overlays, so you can confidently work over the toe box, side panels, and collar. Use the Microfiber Towel as you go.

Step 6: Wipe and air dry

Wipe each cleaned area with the Microfiber Towel, then let your On Running shoes air dry naturally in a cool, shaded area.

Cleaning Tips:

  1. Use cold water only when rinsing midsole openings.
  1. Always air dry — never use direct heat.
  1. Clean regularly to extend performance and keep your shoes looking sharp.

How to clean ASICS shoes

ASICS is a brand with a rich history of innovation, and today, unstoppable in both the running and lifestyle spaces. If your favourite pair needs a freshen up, then look no further, all you need is the Jason Markk Quick Clean Kit to offer a safe and effective way to restore your ASICS trainers – no damage, no stress.

Step 1: Dry brush

Start by using the Delicate Brush to dry-brush the entire shoe to remove loose dust and dirt. It only takes about 30 seconds, but it helps prevent dirt from spreading when you apply the foam later.

Step 2: Apply Foam

Apply 2-3 pumps of Jason Markk Ready-To-Use Foam onto your Delicate Brush – the soft bristles are ideal for mesh.

Step 3: Scrub Section by Section

Start at the midsole and work your way up the shoe, scrubbing each section in circular motions and letting the foam do the heavy lifting. As you go, use the Microfiber Towel to wipe away dirt before moving on to the next area.

Step 4: Focus on the mesh

ASICS mesh can be a bit tricky — it holds onto dirt more than leather or synthetics. For any tough stains on the mesh, go over the area multiple times with the brush and foam, and then use the Microfiber Towel to knead out the dirt, pressing it into the mesh to lift debris from the fibres.

Step 5: Let the shoes air dry

Once your trainers are foam-free and wiped down, let them air dry in a cool, shaded area.

Mesh Cleaning Tips:

  1. Use the Delicate Brush on mesh — it’s safer and more effective.
  2. For stubborn stains, repeat foam application and focus with the towel.
  3. Let your shoes air dry completely before wearing them again.

How to clean GORE-TEX shoes

Water-resistant and sturdy, GORE-TEX trainers keep us protected from the elements when we need it the most. With brands like Salomon, Nike and HOKA offering the latest in trail footwear, you might be wondering how to keep your GORE-TEX shoes clean without damaging performance – enter Jason Markk and the Quick Clean Kit.

Step 1: Dry brush the dirt

Using the Delicate Brush, remove dry dirt and dust from the entire upper and sole unit – this step is especially important for GORE-TEX as mud and buildup can clog breathable membranes. Pay extra attention to areas where dirt can hide, like lace loops, mesh panels and seams.

Step 2: Apply Foam and scrub

Pump Jason Markk Ready-To-Use Foam directly onto the Delicate Brush, then scrub the upper section by section. The brush’s soft bristles won’t damage technical fabrics or compromise waterproofing, making it perfect for performance materials like GORE-TEX.

Focus on high-contact areas, e.g. toe boxes, heel counters, and sidewalls and work in small sections to keep things controlled.

Step 3: Wipe clean with a Microfiber Towel

After scrubbing each area, use the Microfiber Towel to wipe off foam and dirt. This step helps avoid oversaturating the upper – crucial for shoes with water-resistant membranes, where too much water can impact breathability and function.

Step 5: Air dry

Let your GORE-TEX shoes air dry naturally in a cool, shaded area. Avoid direct sunlight, radiators, or tumble drying — excess heat can warp materials and impact waterproof bonding.

Shoe Cleaning Tips:

  1. Avoid soaking the shoe — spot clean only.
  1. Use the Delicate Brush to protect the waterproofing.
  1. Apply Jason Markk Repel after cleaning to maintain water resistance.
