Super light by name, super light by nature – adidas Originals’ SL 72 runner has been excavated from the archive once more.

Pioneers in lightweight footwear, back in the summer of 1972 adidas designed one of the most revolutionary training silhouettes of its time. Backed by the labels’ breakthrough in traction dynamics, the SL 72 quickly accompanied world-class athletes who sought quick speed and agility on the track. With a position on the podium cemented in its DNA, the runner earned its iconic status, while proudly debuting the brand’s famous Trefoil for the first-ever time.

With 2023 drawing to a close, adidas Originals show no signs of slowing down and re-introduce the SL 72 back into the fold. New ‘Night Indigo’ and ‘Maroon’ colourways make a welcome return, alongside new iterations inspired by the past. The SL 72 stays true to the shape of the 1972 OG. A slender profile and narrow toe provide supportive comfort up top, while nylon uppers ensure a super-light feel to boot. Supportive suede overlays feature on the T-toe, heel, mudguard and eyelets for added durability.

On the underside, the heritage runner boasts a streamlined EVA midsole and a rubber toe bumper to prevent any scuffs to the suede toe panels. It’s also worth mentioning the serrated rubber outsole – which harks back to adidas‘ classic traction dynamics systems – and ensures steady grip wherever you find yourself.

A label that’s not short in heritage, adidas Originals’ SL 72 has a rich history in both the entwining worlds of sportswear and streetwear. Since its inception, the model has transcended the tracks and evolved into new contemporary spaces in the fashion realm showcasing its versatile nature. Remaining at the forefront of fuelling the retro resurgence, to us it’s classified as a vintage runner and has inspired the latest SL 72 RS’s shape. 

Souped-up, the reshaped RS is showcased in the new model’s lowers which are characterised by a sawtooth outsole that supports a raised EVA midsole. Timeless branded hits decorate its mixed material upper remaining true to its predecessor’s sports-inspired design, certainly making this newcomer an evergreen staple.
