How LeBron James became the NBA’s all-time leading scorer
Yesterday, LeBron James proved his legendary ‘King James’ status by eclipsing a record set by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and becoming the NBA’s all-time leading scorer! LA Lakers LeBron hit 38,388 points in a 133-130 defeat against Oklahoma City Thunder surpassing Abdul-Jabbar’s long-standing mark, which was held for almost four decades. In honour of LeBron, we’re harking back to some key on and off-court moments.
Ohio-native LeBron was a high school basketball prodigy. Dubbed with the name ‘The Chosen One’ on the cover of Sports Illustrated at just 17 years of age, he led his school to three state championships in four years and his skills were unmatched on the court which mimicked NBA-like stats. Destined for greatness he was drafted into the NBA in 2003 and dominated the league in his rookie year playing for his home state and the Cleveland Cavaliers.
With sneaker culture filtering through to the courts, there’s no denying the NBA is a melting pot for sneaker spotting whether it’s courtside or in the tunnel and LeBron’s rotation is top-tier every time. Spotted in Off-White Blazers, all-red Nike LeBron ‘Liverpool’, and even the Tiffany & Co. x Nike Air Force 1s, LeBron has an endless amount of iconic silhouettes in his collection and is a player who’s been graced with his own sneaker line with Nike.
Looking back to 2005, Lebron released an Air Force 1 pack centered around the five ‘fears’ used in a Zoom LeBron II ‘Chamber of Fear’ campaign. It was during his second season that this campaign depicted a young James facing off with obstacles such as ‘Self-Doubt’, ‘Hype’, ‘Hater’, ‘Complacency’, and ‘Temptation’. The silhouettes feature patent leather and nubuck uppers with hits of the five ‘fears’ embroidered in Chinese script.
With four NBA championships, four MVP awards, and the fourth-most career assists as well as two Olympic gold medals and being named an NBA All-Star a record-tying 19 times, it’s safe to say he’s beaten these five ‘fears’ with his prodigious achievements today.
