Australian-born DJ Nikki Chong started her career behind the scenes as a lighting technician at a night club. She showcased her DJ skills at a national competition which she went on to win, which gave her the opportunity to showcase her talent at Austria’s Snowbombing festival; since then she’s gone from strength to strength.

Tell us about yourself; where you’re from, what you do and what’s your shoe size? 

“Hiya! I’m Nikki Chong, from Australia, with Singapore heritage. Size 37 euro,4/4.5 UK size I have quite small feet.”

How did you get started in the music industry? 

“I started working at a night club working as a lighting technician. However, I entered a national DJ competition (which I won) which gave me the opportunity to play at a music festival! (Snowbombing in Austria).”

How would you describe your music style? 

“Techno with soul.”

What has been your record of the year so far and what are you looking forward to hearing for the rest of the year? 

“OFFFFT… ‘Wait a minute’ – Radio Slave Absolute TUNE! However, Ei8ht Records (Eats Everything & Andres Campo label) have got insane techno coming out and Club Bad, Melés’ label have incredible music coming out as well. Club Bad is definitely one to follow.”

Have you been making much music recently and can we expect some releases soon?

“I’ve never given producing a go; I should probably get into it at some point.”

Has there been a particular event/party that has stood out for your career?

“DJing at Snowbombing festival in Austria was such a crazy gig for me; my first time playing at a festival as well, mad! I mean, I opened and closed for Idris Elba. It was just amazing, DJing in the mountains. Plus I snowboard so that was a bonus.”

And looking further ahead, who should we be looking out for in 2021?

“A couple of names that come to mind is G33 – incredible DJ! I see her absolutely smashing it in the next few years. She has also done a size? session Mix so you should check it out. Sam Holland is also someone I’d keep an eye on, got some amazing tracks coming out!”

On Friday you’re broadcasting an exclusive size? sessions Mix for us. What can we expect to hear? 

“FULL TECHNO WORK OUT AHEAD.”

Outside of the music industry, where do you look for inspiration?  

“I have a degree in 3D animation so I love all animated films and films in general, so I love movie scores. Blade Runner such a classic. If you haven’t watched it, get onto it.”
