On our 17th instalment to our size? sessions (20:20 Mix) we’re set to be joined by none other than the man with the cleanest trainers in the game, Jason Markk.

Renowned worldwide for his premium line of footwear cleaning solutions, the Californian-native has also had a keen interest in DJing from a very early age. We can’t wait for you to hear what he has in store this Friday 7th August, but until then give our exclusive interview a read below…

Tell us about yourself; where you’re from, what is your shoe size?

“I grew up in Southern California in an area known as the South Bay. The best way I can think to describe the area is the intersection of the suburbs, inner-city and the beach. It’s an interesting clash of different cultures and ethnicities to make up what is the South Bay – and is a big part of who I am today. I’m a US 9.”

Growing up in Los Angeles in the 80s, you would have been surrounded by musical influence, can you tell us what artists you looked up to back then and why?

“In my younger years, I was into artists like Guy, Kid ‘n Play, Kwame, DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince. As I got a bit older, I was listening to Tribe, NWA, De La Soul, KRS ONE just to name a few. I was influenced by everything about hip-hop and R&B… the music, dance and style.”

We know you are renowned for your shoe cleaning solutions, but you also have your hand at DJing from a young age, can you tell us about this?

“I started DJing in 1995, my second year in high school. Some of my friends were in a well-known DJ crew. I was over at their house one day after school and they taught me how to blend two records. I was instantly addicted. I started my own crew with a few of my best friends and off we went. We started throwing our own parties and eventually began to get booked for gigs. It was the time of our lives.”

Outside of the music and fashion industry, where do you look for inspiration?

“I’m inspired by everyday living and nature. Some of the best ideas come when I’m just doing my usual routine, for example when cleaning my home. Nature is the greatest teacher. Staying grounded in nature is not only important for me personally, but also for my family.”

Did music impact your love for sneakers and how did it help you start your shoe cleaning brand?

“Music, sports and sneaker culture go hand-in-hand. The style, competitiveness, and swagger are all relative. Keeping your fit and sneakers clean is a must on and off the court.”

How would you describe your music style?

“It all depends on what mood I’m in, but maybe ‘feel good’ describes it best.”

What has been your record of the year so far and what are you looking forward to hearing for the rest of the year?

“Freddie Gibbs & The Alchemist ‘Alfredo’. As for what I’m looking forward to, I’ve been patiently waiting for the next Frank Ocean album.”

And looking further ahead, what can we expect to see from your brand in 2021?

“We have some fun, interesting projects in the works. You’ll just have to wait and see!”

This Friday you’re broadcasting an exclusive size?sessions (20:20 Mix) for us. What can we expect to hear?

“To be honest, it’s been a minute since I’ve broken out the vinyl and 1200s lol, but it’s like riding a bike as they say… A little rust on the bike, but that’s OK. You can expect a mix you can leave on and vibe out to while working or while enjoying a cold one on a Saturday.”

What are your top 3 records of all time?

“‘Doggystyle’ – Snoop Dogg,

‘Donuts’ – J Dilla,

‘Legend’ – Bob Marley & The Wailers.”

What are your top 3 trainers of all time?

“Nike Air Max 1 OG ‘Red/White/Grey’,

Converse Chuck Taylor All Star,

Nike Air Max 97 Silver Bullet.”
