As many of you will know, the Euros occur every four years, bringing together some of the best European-born players to represent their home country on the international stage. Alongside playing in the World Cup, it’s got to be one of the top-honours for any footballer, pulling on your nations shirt and fighting to bring home the Henri Delaunay trophy.
In light of recent events, the 2020 tournament has unfortunately been put on hold for another year – terrible news for football fans all across the continent, we know. We’d actually teamed up with adidas Originals and put together an exclusive footwear capsule to celebrate the event; although the tournament is postponed, our collection isn’t.
So let’s kick things off with the first model in the three-piece collection, the BC Trainer.
Taking you on a trip back to 1976, our BC Trainer celebrates one of the most daring goals scored in a penalty shootout, the ‘Panenka’. Often attempted but scarcely executed, the cheeky chipped penalty coins its name from Antonín Panenka, the Czech football player who had the audacity to attempt the technique in the European final.
It takes a certain kind of man to step up in a moment like that; if it goes wrong, you’re a villain to your entire nation. Luckily for Antonín Panenka, the West German goalkeeper Sepp Maier dived to his left while his chipped ball went straight down the middle. The daring dink meant that Czechoslovakia won the European Final 5–3 on penalties.
So to honour the daring midfielder and celebrate one of our favourite Euros moments, we’ve painted the BC Trainer’s suede and leather uppers in the same blue and red hues as the Czechoslovakian national team. Oh, and we couldn’t create a true ode to Panenka without including a graphic print of the legendary moment; that’s why the footbed is decorated with just that.
