Nike is turning trash into treasure with their all-new ‘Space Hippie’ collection
After a lot of anticipation, Nike has finally unveiled their eco-friendly ‘Space Hippie’ collection, and it looks like we’re really in for a treat with this one.
Comprised of four striking silhouettes – aptly named the Space Hippie 01, 02, 03 and 04 – the series is the next big step in Nike’s journey toward zero carbon and zero waste to help protect the future of sport.
And where did the inspiration for their names come from you might ask? It’s simple: the collection is inspired by life on our intergalactic neighbour, Mars. It’s safe to say materials are scarce on the red planet and resupply missions aren’t an option, so scraps – or ‘space junk’ – has to be reused. The result: the Space Hippie – a combination of eco-friendly practises and out-of-this-world design.
Despite their varying shapes, each of the four models on offer is built almost entirely from at least 25%-50% recycled materials for a true story of trash transformed.
Across the top, all the Space Hippie’s ‘Space Waste Yarn’ uppers are made from around 90% recycled content, including plastic bottles, tees and factory floor scraps. On the underside, the eco theme continues with the brand’s all-new ‘Crater Foam’ midsoles, which use a cushioning mix of standard Nike foams and 15% NikeGrind rubber for the little dashes of colour throughout. Nike has also thrown in a touch of recycled ZoomX foam to the Space Hippie 01, 02 and 03’s insoles for added cushioning. Very nice, indeed.
And from high-cut and low-cut, traditional laces, laceless, and FlyEase fastening, the Space Hippies are built to suit the varying needs of today’s athlete on the go.
Oh, as a nice finishing touch, Nike is ditching the usual double box and housing the Space Hippies in a single shoebox that’s built from recycled materials and stamped with eco-friendly, plant-based ink.
