size? collections – Alex Morris – Carhartt Work In Progress
For this instalment of size? collections, we caught up with Carhartt WIP’s Alex Morris to take a look at his top-notch apparel and footwear collection.
It’s packed with tons of exclusive collaborations from over the years and is sure to make all the Carhartt commissures amongst you green with envy…
BAPE x Carhartt WIP Active Jacket – FW 2006
“From the Fall/Winter 2006 collection – it’s an OG, US workwear fit, 12oz canvas, BAPE camo patterned and co-branded piece.
“So 14 years ago and I’m into BAPE big-time – we used to call the store on Upper James St. and ask the guys in the store to describe new stock which had arrived and pay over the phone, almost pre-internet shopping.
“Then we [Carhartt WIP] make a collaboration with A Bathing Ape, and I am lucky enough to get to choose a piece before it goes on sale in the BAPE store which – outside of Japan – was about the only place on earth to get the product. That’s why this piece is one of my most treasured.”
AWAKE NY x Carhartt WIP Hooded Sweatshirt – SS 2020
“One of our most recent collaborations and an extremely effective one. It was released during Paris Fashion week, so one of the last events before lockdown. I wasn’t there but I remember people calling me up saying Carhartt WIP and AWAKE NY have taken over Paris – nice!
“The contrast stitching and co-branded patch bring AWAKE’s more overt streetwear vibe to our classic American Hooded sweatshirt.”
Oi Polloi x Carhartt WIP Chase Sweatshirt – FW 2018
“A small and very limited numbers project with local, legendary Manchester retailer Oi Polloi, and that sums up why this is on the list. Oi Polloi and Carhartt have the same number of letters, and we just transferred the colours on their script onto the Carhartt script. ‘Talent Borrows, Genius Steals’ – thanks Benetton!”
Patta x Carhartt WIP T-Shirt – FW 2016
“After the sell-out of the 2014 project we worked with Patta and it went off again. I actually missed the Rip-Stop Nimbus Jacket we did, and I’m still wondering why I slept on that. I have the T-shirt, and we see for the first time a purple colour which we are using again and has been super strong this year.”
A.P.C x Carhartt WIP Pocket T-Shirt
“We first working together in 2008 after a plan was hatched back in 2006 in Stockholm when we opened stores on the same street. I think this tee is the 2nd ‘INTERACTION’ between the 2 brands. I have the first 1 but it’s not in a fit condition to post on here. This opened us up to the crossover directional menswear guys.”
Vans x Carhartt WIP Chukka Boot – FW 2008
“Our first adventure into footwear collaborations, so an important one. And there’s no better like-minded brand than Vans, with them being precursors in the European skate and streetwear scenes. So this has to be in the collection. ‘Carhartt’ brown canvas – simple.”
Converse x Carhartt Chuck Taylor All Star 70s Ox – SS 2017
“Our first hook up with Converse in a utilitarian cotton drill with red accents on the outsole to reference the red bar tacks on OG US workwear.
“Again, another combination of two originals doing what they do well. This week sees the project with Converse take its next step with the RENEW/upcycling Carhartt WIP shoe, utilising dead-stock workwear canvas. They have a 28.05.20 launch.”
Nike x Carhartt WIP Air Max 95 – FW 2018
“I’m a Mancunian scallywag at heart and the Air Max 95 is one of my all-time favourite shoes along with the Jordan IV. I couldn’t get or afford the Carhartt Jordan Eminem shoe, so our version of the Air Max 95, utilising camo rip-stop, corduroy, 3M, mesh and blanket-lining is one of my favourites.”
