The adidas Originals SL 76 is returning exclusively to size?
We’re continuing the resurgence of adidas Originals’ SL series this spring by bringing back another beauty from their archive, the SL 76.
Making its debut in 1976 – just in time for the somewhat controversial Montréal Olympics – the SL 76 was the second instalment in adidas’ Super-Light range of training shoes.
A natural progression from the SL 72, the 76 boasted a similar combination of lightweight nylon and supportive suede overlays across the top, except this time adidas added a ghilly-loop lacing system for maximum adjustability.
If you’re unfamiliar with the ghilly-loop system, the D-shaped eyelet rings enable you to tighten your laces from the top to the bottom with one quick pull. This simple, yet effective, feat of engineering would go on to revolutionise athletic footwear for years to come.
So, after many years tucked away in the archive, we thought 2020 would be the perfect time to reintroduce the SL 76 in all its original glory. And to take it right back to the beginning, we’ve brought back the lightweight trainer in its classic green and yellow palette.
Remaining true to the specs of the OG, we’ve paid special attention to ensure the materials and details are as close to the 1976 pair as possible. Across the top, we’ve kept the tried and tested combination of super-light woven nylon uppers, plus supportive suede overlays on the T-toe and eyestay for added durability.
Sitting underneath, the heritage runner boasts a streamlined EVA midsole and a rubber toe-bumper to prevent any scuffs to the suede toe panels. It’s also worth mentioning the serrated rubber outsole – which harks back to adidas’ classic traction dynamics systems – and ensures a steady grip on whatever surface you may find yourself.
