Nike Air Tech Challenge II ‘Hot Lava’

Paying homage to a seminal era in sport history when the tennis great Andre Agassi dominated the Grand Slam courts, Nike are proud to present the Air Tech Challenge II. This iconic ’90s court shoe worn by “The Punisher” during countless triumphs, returns to its original and highly sought-after colourway nicknamed “Hot Lava”.

Although this silhouette has had its own legacy, it might be more significant in recent years thanks to its sole unit being featured upon Kayne West’s Nike Air Yeezy 2. The simple, bold colour blocking stays true to the original along with its smooth form.

Originally designed with the sport’s unique demands in mind, the shoe’s upper is constructed of synthetic white perforated leather, which created a perfectly hard-wearing canvas for the rigorous back and forth of on the court movements, whilst still remaining lighter than most low top tennis shoes of that time.

adidas’ definitive Torsion Sole System has been a huge part of the sports world ever since its initial integration in 1988, first featured on the iconic ZX5000. With the enormous growth of the running culture at the start of the 90s, adidas continued to stay at the top of their game with several new styles from their innovative EQT series – the Torsion Integral being one of the best.

Incorporating the iconic Torsion bar into its midsole, it was presented with both a natural and independent movement connecting the forefoot and the rear of the shoe perfectly. This innovative piece of design now ignites this classic 90s throwback with a range of seasonally friendly colors, while still retaining their tried and tested construction.

As well as the unchallenged stability and comfort due to the soft cell technology presented in the sole unit, the full pop of color included on the side TPU stripes will also help you remember that this is still a retro shoe.

The colourful pops of mint green on the outsole, thermo-plastic eyelets and Jumpman logos throughout is a warmly welcomed addition and although they aren’t completely glow in the dark, they do however give off a ghostly ambience, which sits nicely with the clean white midsole and the solid black accents.

Nike Cortez QS ‘Natural Motion’

The Nike Cortez has had one of the most iconic silhouettes from the brands back catalogue of running legends since its conception back in 1972. It changed the sport of running forever with its revolutionary dual density foam sole unit and mixed nylon and suede constructed upper, a deadly combination that instantly cast a shadow across the running world for many years to come.

Along with a star-studded appearance in the Hollywood blockbuster ‘Forest Gump’, in which Tom Hanks runs across America in a pair of Nike Cortez, the legendary silhouette has been given its fair share of hybrid mock-ups, including the 2009 Flywire option. This minimalistic version featured a traditional base that utilised the original sole unit and essentially cut it up, creating a Free-inspired version, aptly named ‘Natural Motion’. Continuing this legacy, we are happy to present the latest in the series.

With a blend of nylon and suede, celebratory to Bill Bowerman’s first track creation, it also features a modernised application of 3M throughout, whether it’s the subtle accents around the toe and heel, or the fully reflective tongue piece, this is definitely an icon reborn for the 21st Century.

Nike Air Stab & Tennis Classic AC – size? Exclusive

Abbreviating stability, the Air Stab was inaugurated during the late 80’s, giving the iconic air unit a more substantial structure. Air Jordan V ‘Fire Red’

Although a lot of the general aesthetics are the same, such as the fighter plane motif along the mid sole and ‘Back to the Future’ inspired clear outsole, this 1990 model wasn’t originally released to the public due to the limited edition jersey number embroidered on the heel.

At the time of initial release, this ‘Player Edition’ had been limited to only 100 pairs, and were both given to unfortunate children and auctioned off to charity creating a wide-spread search for them throughout the 1990s.

New Balance 577 ‘Seaside Pack’

“Oh, I do like to be beside the seaside…”

The British seaside was at its peak during the Victorian era as for the first time a holiday was allowed for working class people. A previously elite pastime of going to the seaside was now being encouraged by doctors as a way to live healthier. Today remnants of the Victorian era still exist with piers, brightly coloured candy striped helter-skelters and carousels can be seen across various seaside resorts around the coasts of Britain. On a bright sunny day you can still find people on deck chairs, eating a stick of rock or having ice cream whilst building sandcastles or paddling.

In homage of such traditions New Balance have presented us with the 577 ‘Seaside Pack’, whilst also celebrating the work of three British seaside craftsmen who keep Britain’s unique traditions alive – Figgi : Artisan Ice Cream Producer, Steve : Beach Hut Manufacturer, and Mark : Sand Sculptor.

Air Jordan 1 OG ‘Black Toe’

The Air Jordan series has always had its rarities, but one of the rarest colourways has to be the ‘Black Toe’. Last seen as part of the limited ‘Old Love/New Love’ pack from 2007, this version of the OG Air Jordan 1 features all of the pioneering characteristics of the original, with one obvious difference, the black panelling around the toe and mid-quarter.

This highly anticipated release holds true to its original form, with ‘NIKE AIR’ branding on the tongue and the winged ‘AIR JORDAN’ on the ankle, both of which have been extremely popular additions, mainly due to the recent ’88 reissue. The soft white and black leather upper will be hard to keep crease-free, but we think this adds to its dated feel exceptionally well and definitely won’t deter anyone from holding off on them.

Nike Air Pegasus 89 OG

The Air Pegasus is one of Nike’s most famed as well as being one of their most un-sung heroes of all time. Originally designed to provide runners with an affordable yet highly comfortable and durable option, the Pegasus has been altered and evolved to become a different style of performance footwear, adaptable to various kinds of runners worldwide.

First introduced in 1983, Nike immediately made it known that this wasn’t an ordinary training shoe and so aptly named it after the majestic winged horse of Greek mythology. The Air Pegasus was supposed to embody the same quickness, movement and overall allure of flying on “Air”, but just like the mythological creature was half horse, the Nike Pegasus was half Air.

Nike Air Max 1 x Roundel by London Underground

The Nike x Roundel by London Underground Collection fuses a set of ground-breaking urban icons: Nike’s Air Max 1 and the London Tube. Famous patterns from the world’s first underground railway intertwines with Nike’s latest technology; an engineered woven Jacquard, creating a truly unforgettable design.

Representing the diverse and unique style of the city of London, the Air Max 1 takes direct inspiration from the famous seat upholstery found in the railway cars from the capital. Traditionally made from moquette (a hardwearing wool and polyester mix), the specially commissioned geometric pattern was created by famed designer Misha Black and was introduced in 1978 for the new trains on the District Line.

Becoming a familiar sight for tube and bus commuters during the 1980s, the District design was a pattern that was widely used all over the city the year the Air Max 1 was launched. This design has now been transferred over to the shoe on poly Jacquard weaved overlay panels creating a striking effect. The shoe also features an updated fit and feel, ‘Roundel’ branding on the tongue and a natural gum rubber outsole.

Nike SB Dunk Low Premium ‘De La Soul’

In 1989, Long Island trio De La Soul boldly announced their arrival on a burgeoning hip-hop scene with oodles of clever wordplay, a perfect grip of eclectic samples and a unique point of view the likes of which the genre had never seen before. The result was 3 Feet High and Rising, the group’s classic debut album that largely bucked hip hop trends of the day in favour of a sound one could only characterise as more peace medallion than dookie gold chain.

Posdnuos, Trugoy the Dove and PA Mase (aka Plugs 1, 2 and 3) eschewed the typical braggadocio-style of rhyming from that era with a more laid-back leftfield approach, simultaneously expanding any perceived limitations in hip-hop as well as the audience make-up of those who listen to it. Transmitting live from Mars, The DA.I.S.Y. Age (short for Da Inner Sound Ya’ll) had officially begun.

As long-time fans of both the group and their music, a fresh-faced Nike SB released a Dunk Low Premium SB in honor of De La’s debut opus in 2005. A key release in SB’s crucial early years, the collaboration quickly became one of the brand’s most successful and sought-after releases.

Air Jordan IV ‘Toro Bravo’

It’s been a little while since the legendary Air Jordan IV made an appearance, but it seems that like last year’s highly popular ‘Bred’ release, the Jordan Brand has once again utilised the landmark red and black colours that created so much controversy when the Air Jordan series was first unveiled on the AJI back in 1985.

Reminiscent of the special edition Air Jordan V of the same nickname circa 2009, this version boasts a full ‘Fire Red’ nubuck upper alongside solid black and subtle grey accents. Even though the colourway on this 1989 silhouette would probably never have made it onto an court during Michael Jordan’s heyday due to the NBA’s notoriously strict footwear and uniform regulations, the overall design seems very well judged by the brand.

New Balance 576 OG ’25th Anniversary Pack’

In 1988, Massachusetts-based footwear brand New Balance created the 576, a style that was hugely popular within the running community and designed specifically for the US market. Even though momentum and the initial awareness of the 576 was accepted very well to start off with, it steadily slowed down and was finally dropped from production. New Balance 997 ‘Made in USA’

A silhouette that isn’t as instantly recognisable as some of its counterparts that sit on the shelves alongside them, the 997 made its return in several original coluorways. Nike Air Huarache Light OG ‘Ultramarine’

Another brainchild of Nike design legend Tinker Hatfield, the Air Huarache was inspired by a boot used for water sports; the neoprene sock liner and heel cage gave additional comfort and support. The Air Huarache Light used the regular Air Huarache blueprint but merely as the foundations; they stripped any excess weight and materials.

So to release the new, lighter silhouette, Nike experimented with new colour palettes and materials, unbeknown to them that the result would go down in history forever. Sitting on a clean white midsole, accents of Dragon Red feature on the sole as well as the heel tab, swoosh and Air Huarache branding on the tongue. The upper is made up predominantly of a hard wearing black mesh and caging meeting the soft, blue paneling. Hits of a light cyan blue work in tandem with the ultramarine, creating a colourway that has been lauded ever since.

PUMA States OG

Back in the 80’s, the PUMA Suede became the ‘it’ shoe in the hip-hop scene on the streets of New York City. A timeless classic and an integral part of sneaker history, the style was embraced by many sub-cultures and called by many names: the ‘Suede’, the ‘Clyde’, and PUMA ‘Joints’ to name a few – but it was the UK scene that adopted this style and made it their own, aptly re-naming it the PUMA ‘States’, after its birthplace.

Initially, the shoe was not sold in Britain and was hard to find: but the legendary status amongst the NYC Hip-Hop community meant that people were shipping them over to feed a burgeoning underground casuals scene across the pond, where it became known as the ‘States’. Spring/Summer ’14 sees PUMA re-issue the States.

To celebrate the re-issue of the ‘States’ back into the UK market, PUMA have commissioned renowned British photographer and street culture connoisseur Normski to capture and interview some of the brands key players, friends, and biggest fans to reminisce and help explain how such a simple Suede sneaker made its way onto the streets and ended up as a fashion and cult icon in the UK.

Air Jordan 1 OG ‘Bred’

In 1984, Nike created a signature shoe for an up-and-coming rookie by the name of Michael Jordan to match the uniform of the Chicago Bulls, the team which he played for. During the 1985 basketball season, the NBA and more prominently NBA Commissioner David Stern banned them, due to the lack of white used on this shoe.

However, His Airness continued to wear them and eventually Nike was fined $5,000 by the NBA each and every time they were seen on court, supplying Nike with a promotional tool that was utilised in television advertisements hinting that the shoes gave an unfair advantage to whoever wore them.

adidas Originals Hamburg OG

Initially released in 1982 as part of adidas’ now legendary City Series, the adidas Originals Hamburg returns two decades after its steady rise to becoming one of the most popular street-ready silhouettes during the football-casual movement through Europe in the early 80s.

With news first breaking about the return of this iconic model last year and the long wait for concrete news finally over, we can now happily welcome this iconic design back with open arms. This particular model has rarely been seen, thus maintaining its highly sought-after status along with similar models such as the Koln, Amsterdam and Wien.

For the first batch of colourways, adidas have readjusted the distinctive sole unit from its original off-white colouring to a now hard-wearing gum and presented us with two colourways; a bright yellow with royal blue accents associated with the famed ‘Malmö’, and the highly anticipated original ‘Hamburg’ tones of navy and white.

Nike SB x Air Jordan 1 ‘Lance Mountain’

Originally designed as a high performance basketball sneaker for an upcoming star of the game, the Air Jordan I has also introduced innovation to skate culture. Three decades after its introduction it remains one of the most storied skate shoes, and this unintentional answer to the needs of skateboarders has brought Nike SB and Jordan Brand to collaborate with its second Nike SB x Air Jordan I release.

Just as skateboarders have always managed to repurpose the world around them — turning neglected pools into paradise, vast pipes into destinations for sessions and tackling anti-skate measures as part of a terrain to conquer — this signature basketball shoe became their choice. Its high ankle coverage, padding, Nike Air technology and durable premium leather made coping with big landings and grip tape an afterthought.

Nike Air Huarache ‘Platinum White’

Since its bold and triumphant return at the beginning of last year, the Nike Air Huarache has seen its fair share of colourways, both new and old. It’s sported the size? exclusive bright ‘Laser Orange’ and colour popping ‘Fuchsia’, along with the original ‘Emerald Green’ and ‘Game Royal’, and now returns for the start of spring in a summery all-white.

The iconic cushioned sole and thermoplastic heel strap is accompanied by subtly perforated clean white leather panels, a hexagonal embroidered mesh toe box, all sitting perfectly alongside the legendary foot hugging sock. With every inch of this shoe covered in spotless white, there’s definitely no argument against the fact that this is the summer shoe of the year.

Nike Air Huarache OG

It’s hard to talk about a trainer release from our era that’s not either had a retro re-release or has been treated to Nike’s famous Vintage off-white sole, let alone one that is as rare and more sought-after than the Nike Air Huarache. First released in 1991 at the height of the running heyday, the iconic runner was designed to mimic old Native American sandals by the same name.

The foot-hugging sock was the main focus and Nike weren’t going to hide that from anyone, and so they made sure that the final design showcased it off as much as possible. With a combination of stretchy neoprene and spandex, both materials that were heavly used at the time (maybe you can remember Mr. Motivator?), the sock literally hugged your foot supplying a ‘Huarache fit’. The fit was further complimented with a thermoplastic heel strap, which was presented in a full range of very bright colourways, just like the 90’s era itself.

Nike Air Max 93 ‘Metals’ – size? Worldwide Exclusive

Since we rediscovered the Nike Air Max 93 at the end of last year it has become a firm favourite for Nike Air fans around the globe, having been showcased in various exclusive colourways. And now, we’ve unearthed two more.

Focusing upon several metallic variations such as platinum, iron oxide, zinc, the elemental state of copper and hematite, as well as taking inspiration from the periodic group of “rare earth” metals known as lanthanides, the neoprene equipped favourite is now presented using a variety of burnt red, orewod brown, cool grey and platinum white.

This perfectly balanced colour palette has been applied to soft leather suede and patterned synthetic leather that’s complemented nicely by a metallic jacquard mesh toe box, while the iconic 270-degree exposed Air Unit sits inside a tonal midsole. The finished product supplies an effortlessly polished finish.

21. Nike x size? Air Max Light ‘Urban Safari’

The late 80s are still regarded as an absolute golden era for Nike with outdoor-inspired patterns, design inspiration and silhouettes dominating. 1987 saw the launch of the Air Safari, one of the boldest patterns ever seen on athletic footwear. This was followed a year later by the lesser-spotted Lava High model, which leads us nicely into 1989. The launch of a small Nike department entitled ‘All Conditions Gear’ (better known as ‘ACG’) was quickly gathering pace within the hiking, climbing and mountain biking communities, producing specially created innovative and eye catching silhouettes.

With most outdoor lines now officially under the ACG banner, 1991 was the year famed Nike designer Tinker Hatfield and his crew of visionaries produced the revered Air Mowabb; a silhouette that was designed like no other, with the main inspiration taken from the rugged terrain found in the Moab desert, Utah. All Condition Gear models had an aesthetic like no other, the majority featuring loud and brash colourways that would previously never have been seen on a hiking trail. Yet it’s precisely because of these features that they have evolved into holding a legendary status.

With a more ostentatious nature, this final chapter breaks the mould created by parts 1 and 2. Gone are the subtle sand and black tones seen on the Air Max Light, Toki and Roshe Run, replaced here with an unmistakable pop colour palette and an eye catching heel wrap of Nike’s signature Safari print. 12. Nike Flyknit Racer Multi

After finding how to continuously offer support and comfort, the next goal for running shoe manufacturers was to create a shoe that replicated the same feeling of a sock. Nike took this challenge head on. First up were the Air Sock Racer and the Air Huarache followed by the Air Rift and Air Presto, all of which made massive break-throughs when released. But Nike has never given up on its quest to create a piece of footwear that would feel like a second skin, a shoe that provides a snug fit and goes virtually unnoticed by the wearer. But one of the main problems that they encountered was the lack of support and structure within the materials being used.

So four years ago Nike set off on a journey of mirco-engineering static properties into pliable materials, applying their 40 years worth of knowledge, to create what is now known as one of the lightest, best fitting running shoes the brand has ever made. The Flyknit.

4. adidas Originals Stan Smith OG

The adidas Stan Smith shoe is one of the most iconic footwear styles in existence and has frequently voted a classic. Since taking a break a few seasons ago, its status as a cult shoe has only grown. The Stan Smith model is one of the few out there that look equally good worn-in or fresh out their box and while there are nuances for the experts it really is a shoe for everyone. Stan Smith is the archetypal ‘classic’ shoe, a word that is wrongly attributed to many less worthy designs. Too often the terrace appreciation of adidas and the hip-hop affiliated love of the 3-Stripes can run in completely different lanes, but with the Stan Smith shoe model they merge, respecting the simplicity and versatility of the shoe.

The Adi Dassler design philosophy of ‘form following function’ led to a simplistic design combined with functionality. Uniting this with the tennis regulations of the time, lead to a white leather shoe that was pure in function, as well as, design. To this day the simple perforated stripe design not only gives the shoe a clean look, but also necessary breathability.

1. Nike Mayfly Woven QS

Nike’s Mayfly silhouette has always been in question whether it was supposed to ever make it to the production line. With a simple and very minimal construction, the super-lightweight runner had originally been designed around the tenets set by legendary track-and-field coach, Bill Bowerman – to be light and faster.

The initial concept provided an unexpected twist due to the nimble design, presenting the wearer with an extreme warning of an approximate 62 mile / 100 km recommended lifespan. This fragile model has now been greatly improved on, with the inclusion of both the Nike Woven concept, for a more refined look, and an increased durability thanks to a soft leather and suede upper.
