Nike’s LunarGlide series has been an understated success story for over a half decade now. Defined by a sequence of pragmatic, no-nonsense upper designs, the Glide’s all-round workhorse status has often seen it overshadowed by the brighter lights in the Nike running armada. That low profile looks set to change with the arrival of the sixth iteration.

When Nike recently invited Sneaker Freaker to take the new LunarGlide 6 for a test spin, we couldn’t speed dial 131 008 for a cab to the airport quick enough. On arrival at the picturesque destination, a rugged coastal area near Sydney, we were met by a group of equally confused fresh-faces and the challenge that lay ahead of us – a taxing 8k run through the Sydney Harbour National Park. While we assessed the parameters of the task and traded specs with Nike’s EKIN running specialists, the daunting sensation quickly faded as we were outfitted in an arsenal of running tech and a fresh pair of the LunarGlide 6.

While we’d already received an enticing peek at the 6 at the shoe’s initial launch, finally we had a pair in our possession. First impressions are always the best and there’s no denying the LunarGlide 6 is a handsome piece of kit. Wrapped boldly in a megawatt dose of ultravivid cobalt blue, it’s the spirited asymmetrical colour story down back that really grabbed our attention. Ultra-light and pillowy-soft, the Lunarlon outsole is the real-deal when it comes to comfort, and with an updated Dynamic Support system, it goes equally as hard as it looks.

As the sun still slept behind the mountains around us, we embarked on our journey by sea, then by land. Like well dressed warriors clad in lycra, we were ready to face our opponent. As the sun awoke to bless our determined group with some truly breathtaking views, a sudden moment of insight was even more rewarding. After eight gruelling high-ground kilometres, these LunarGlides had delivered us safely to the summit. Buffed by endorphins and the thrill of reaching the final destination, it felt like we’d been gliding for 8000 metres on a bed of molten marshmallows. Say hello to the LunarGlide 6, it’s worth it.
