Nike Air Jordan IV 2012 Retro
Big Jordan releases seem to be a bit like buses as of late, after a couple of years of tit-for-tat retros the last 6 months or so have had many-a-Jordan head living in their overdraft with reissues of cult classics like the black/cement III’s and Concord XI’s, and this looks set to continue on Saturday 18th February when the team at Nike’s Jordan Brand division bring back arguably the most recognisable release from their famed back catalogue, the Air Jordan IV (4) white/cement.
First released in 1989, the AJ4 flew off shelves (despite it’s $110 price tag) and took the world by storm thanks to a global marketing campaign by Nike that featured Spike Lee’s ‘Mars Blackmon’ character and his ‘Can/Can’t’ TV ad. The shoes popularity was further boosted when Lee chose to feature it in his seminal hit release ‘Do The Right Thing’ where character ‘Buggin Out’ (played by Giancarlo Esposito) is seen getting into a confrontation with a cyclist who scuffs his pristine pair, prompting him to pull out a toothbrush and scrub them clean right there and then on top of a nearby fire hydrant.
On the performance side of things, the Tinker Hatfield designed 4 (at the time) was the most technologically advanced basketball specific silhouette on the market. It benefited from the same visible Air unit as the one seen the previous year on the AJ3 alongside a host of other features, including a weight reducing/breathable plastic-coated mesh on the upper and distinctive side straps (designed to increase ankle support); all of which helped Jordan reach new heights in his career.
This year’s much-anticipated reissue sees the AJ4 released for only the third time in history in the white/black-cement grey colourway. Last seen in 1999, Jordan fans have had a long 13 year wait since it was last about so it’s no surprise then to hear that this release is already hotly tipped to be one of the most sought after releases of 2012 and to celebrate we have 2 pairs to give away.
The white/black-cement grey Nike Air Jordan IV Retro will be available from size? stores and online on Saturday 18th February.
More info on how you can be in with a chance to win a pair will follow shortly so keep checking back for details, but in the meantime enjoy the pics and check out Mars Blackmon’s original ‘Can/Can’t’ advert below……
