Patagonia Jacket Selection

Over 40 years ago an experienced climber by the name of Yvon Chouinard founded Patagonia. Evolving his love of the outdoors he introduced his fellow climbers with a new functional form of clothing that started from his small blacksmith shop in California.

Originally producing environmentally-friendly hardware with fellow climber and aeronautical engineer Tom Frost, together they formed a company called Chouinard Equipment. They travelled all over the US forging pitons during the winter months, spending April to July on the walls of Yosemite, then heading out of the heat of summer to the high mountains of Canada or the Alps. On their travels, selling climbing gear from the back of Yvons car, the team visited Scotland during the winter of 1970 and stumbled upon a rugby team shirt they thought would be perfect for rock climbing. Made to withstand the rigors of rugby, it had a collar that would keep the hardware slings from cutting into the neck and featuring colourful red and yellow panels. The shirts were an instant success within their climbing community back in the States.

With us now fully in the midst of freezing weather here in the UK, we’ve taken a look at some of the best coats currently available from Patagonia that are guaranteed to keep you warm this winter.

Down Sweater Jacket

Resembling the trademark look of a traditional puffa style jacket, the Down Sweater is filled with 800-fill-power Traceable down, meaning the insular material used can be traced back to it’s original source to ensure the animals used were treated ethically to obtain the down. The addition of a hood to this jacket in comparison to collared versions we’ve seen previously is another great featured designed to block out the cold.

Diamond Quilt Bomber Jacket

More of a lightweight variation of a traditional bomber jacket, the Diamond jacket is insulated using a 80-g Thermogreen 100% Polyester, 90% of which is comprised using Patagonia’s celebrated recycled material. Using this recycled option means Patagonia are less dependent on using raw materials during the production process which greatly reduces their overall carbon footprint. As well as two belly pockets around the bottom half, the jacket also includes a zip-up chest pocket to keep your valuable safe.

Nano Bivy Puff Pullover

The only overhead option in our selection, the Nano Bivy continues our chosen theme of insulated jackets. The smaller pockets of polyester help to spread the insulation evenly across the entire body, making use of the Recycled polyester program used in several of their other technical puffer’s. The external material is extremely windproof, helping to keep you warm in the streets (or mountain’s if that’s your preferred terrain!) and is treated with a Durable Water Repellent coating to ensure you’re kept dry throughout.
